Gulzar - Dil Dhoondta Hai - A Musical Tribute

Dil Dhoondta Hai…
A musical tribute to Gulzar

He is a multifaceted personality – an eminent filmmaker, a remarkable director, an incisive screenplay and dialogue writer, an acclaimed author and a lyricist bestowed with several prestigious awards and encomium. Above all Gulzar is a revered poet, who has carved a niche for himself in every cineaste’s heart. His style signalizes a sensitivity that is best reflected through his writing and treatment of films. Mumbai based music troupe MUSICOLOR organised a grand musical nite titled ‘Dil Dhoondta Hai – Greatest hits of Gulzar’ at Vile Parle’s Dinanath Mangeshkar Natyagriha to showcase the eminent writers works. The evening featured an ensemble of evergreen classics like Is mod se jaate hain ( Aandhi ), Naam gum jayega ( Kinara ), O majhi re ( Kushboo ), Aanewala pal ( Golmaal ), Mora gora ang ( Bandhini ), Bole re papihara ( Guddi ), Woh sham kuch ajeeb thi ( Khamoshi ), Na jiya lage na ( Anand ), Aaj kal paon zameen par ( Ghar ) and the national award winning score Mera kuch samaan ( Ijazzat ) among others. Immensly talented singers like Gaurav Bangia, Shrikant Narayan, Vrushali Patil, Sagar Savarkar and Sarita Rajesh flawlessly rendered these songs penned by Gulzar.

The programme was hosted by Pune based compere Sandeep Panchwatkar, who apart from playing the perfect emcee shed light on the writer’s works and also narrated several anecdotes related to the song gems. He further expounded that born on August 18, 1936 in a small town named Deena (now in Pakistan) 'Sampooran Singh Kalra' ( Gulzar’s original name ) enthusiastically participated in antaksharis and evinced great interest in shayaris as a kid. Like hordes of other households, Gulzar’s family too suffered the pangs of partition before moving to Amritsar. With dreams to make it big in the tinsel world Gulzar landed in Mumbai and started off as a garage mechanic before joining distinguished filmmakers like Bimal Roy and Hrishikesh Mukherjee as their assistant. The evening was enlivened by mellifluous songs like Beeti na bitayi ( Parichay ), Mujhe jaan na kaho meri jaan ( Anubhav ), Ek akela is shaher mein ( Gharondha ), Ankhon mein humne ( Thodisi Bewafai ), Aap ki ankhon mein kuch ( Ghar ), Meethe bole bol ( Kinara ), Tum pukar lo ( Khamoshi ), Ruke ruke se kadam ( Mausam ), Jaane kya sochkar (Kinara ), Piya bawri ( Khoobsorat ), Huzoor is kadar ( Masoom ), Ae zindagi gale laga le ( Sadma ), Yaara sili sili ( Lekin ), Koi hota jisko apna ( Mere Apne ) and the title song Dil dhoonta hai ( Mausam ). One of the highlights of the evening was the splendid rendition of ‘Lakdi ki kaati’ from Masoom by child artistes Muskhan and Shreyesh that won the biggest round of applause. The event was sponsored by Aarthi Enterprises Pvt Ltd, a leading distributor of consumer products. The CEO of the company Ganesh Iyer was felicitated by singer Sarita Rajesh, who spearheads MUSICOLOR.
